Synopsis

President Mariano De Santis’ term is coming to an end. Disparagingly nicknamed ‘Cemento armato’ (reinforced concrete) for his intractable nature and overly careful approach to politics, he has grown lonely in the echoing halls of the presidential palace, mourning the loss of his wife and listening to hip-hop. Before returning to civilian life, De Santis must make a series of bold decisions – a pair of presidential pardons and a groundbreaking policy bill – that will cement his legacy.

Themes and Analyses

  • Moral and political accountability The heart of the film concerns how a powerhouse La Grazia is able to deal with the consequences of their decisions affecting the quality of life or death, justice, as well as mercy. There is a tension between morality, law and empathy, institution duty.

  • Insecurity and forgiveness The idea of “grazia” (pardon or grace) is legal as well as spiritual. The movie seems to be exploring how one might grant grace, receive grace or be able to accept in the face of uncertainty.
